ABSTRACT
Postarthroscopic glenohumeral chondrolysis (PAGHCL) is a rapid, destructive process of the articular cartilage, typically occurring within 12 months of a shoulder arthroscopic procedure. Chondrolysis occurs when chondrocytes lose the ability to maintain and produce cartilage matrix. It also occurs as a result of apoptosis. PAGHCL is distinguished from the more common glenohumeral osteoarthritis by its temporal relationship with an arthroscopic procedure. 1 The diagnosis is confirmed via a shoulder radiograph demonstrating a loss of normal glenohumeral joint space. The etiology can be divided into 3 broad categories as described by Solomon et al 2 : patient, surgical, and postoperative factors. Knowledge of the potential inciting causes is essential to avoid this devastating complication.
